An endorsement switch made news in the Virginia gubernatorial race last week. On Thursday, September 28, Middlesex County Sheriff David Bushey announced his decision to switch his endorsement for governor from Democrat Ralph Northam to Republican Ed Gillespie.
“I believe it to be my duty as a law enforcement officer, and a Virginian, to support the candidate who I know will keep our Commonwealth safe,” said Bushey in his announcement. “The contrast between Ed Gillespie and Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam has never been more clear.”
Bushey is the 64th Sheriff in the Commonwealth to endorse Ed Gillespie. His support comes on the heels of the Virginia Police Benevolent Association’s August decision to throw its weight behind Gillespie.
Bushey’s switch from Northam to Gillespie is also timely in light of new FBI crime statistics, showing both violent crime and murder is up in the Commonwealth.
