On Saturday, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb formally announced that he will be seeking reelection for governor in 2020. Speaking to a packed and enthusiastic crowd at the iconic Hoosier Gym, Holcomb touted the tremendous progress Indiana has experienced under his leadership. As reported by the Indianapolis Star, “The economy, jobs, infrastructure, public health and education are all doing well in the Hoosier state, Holcomb said…Unemployment is down, exports are up and more Hoosiers are working in the private sector than ever before, he said.”
Since taking office in 2017, Governor Holcomb has been “putting people first,” by tackling the opioid epidemic, making record investments in infrastructure, and launching job training and career opportunity initiatives. In addition, nearly 67,000 nonfarm jobs and over 16,000 manufacturing jobs have been created during the governor’s tenure, and the state’s unemployment rate has declined by over 7 percent, from 3.9% in January 2017 to 3.6% in May 2019.
Media reports have focused on Governor Holcomb’s strong standing heading into the race. The Associated Press noted that the governor has “several advantages,” noting that in addition to his strong record of policy accomplishments, the governor recently reported record fundraising. Reporters have highlighted that the governor “begins his re-election bid with a sizeable financial advantage,” even stressing that his cash advantage could be “potentially insurmountable” for any opponents to match. “Since taking office Governor Holcomb has delivered key wins on the issues that matter most to Hoosiers, like growing Indiana’s economy, creating jobs, and expanding opportunity for working families,” said RGA Communications Director Amelia Chassé Alcivar. “The RGA is committed to ensuring that Governor Holcomb is reelected to continue to deliver real results for the people of Indiana – he’s just getting started.”
